There is something reassuringly robust about The
Punch Bowl Inn. Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where
the Wainwright Gold is well kept and a huge leather sofa
sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining
room, solid and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors
and tables unadorned with cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

Stornoway black pudding with crispy egg and bubble and squeak: ‘pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis’, is
Tom’s verdict

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind
Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil
Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something
of a legend around these parts. But first dinner, and a sublime
twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly,
lasciviously rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham,
is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.

A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing
to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with
bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.

There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched
by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the
skin crisp, the sauce just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon.
I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most
gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of
the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a
banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of
sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the
sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late
now, and we’ve an early start. But first, another
bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be
rushed.

menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the
magnificent local Lake District larder.

A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both
light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.

There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the
right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the
stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s
pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is
famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time
the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of
sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this
are too rare to be rushed.

Opening Ceremony live, with the best seats costing more than £2500.

Despite heavy rain, many sat through multiple acts, including
a pre-recorded one by Lady Gaga, which was shown on multiple screens
along the river, as well as around the world.

But Ms Dion’s performance was meant to be a live one, and it
has just been released as such on various streaming platforms.

Ms Dion announced on Instagram on Thursday that the ‘live’ recording was available on sites
such as YouTube and Spotify.

‘God brings together those who love each other,’ Ms Dion wrote in a reference to the song’s lyrics.

These are Piaf’s words to the love of her life, French-Algerian boxer Marcel Cerdan, who died in a plane crash in October 1949.

French president Emmanuel Macron spoke about the Dion Olympics performance in an interview with Variety magazine this week,
saying it caused the ‘biggest emotion’ of all at Paris 2024.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts
of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s
Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to
him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry,
Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a
hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally
requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the
Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London,
Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose
to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he
was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see
declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo
of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior
adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal
MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney
seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’
Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still
‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister
made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve
seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part
in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist,
wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at
this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and
he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which
is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you
were the Transport Minister? The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to
avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should
refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many
people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent,
the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences
politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you
name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about
and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually
winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is
with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him,
is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years
and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the
International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like
to others when he’s on the gravy train. And
I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of
that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel
to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s
in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted
and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing
your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas
who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades
(for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his
time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians
to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these
staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they
don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to
go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and the
Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge
its policy path. The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after
a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.
Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2%
band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a
Reuters’ estimate.

China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.

The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar strength, but the
currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from
expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward
is unattractive. “Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures
that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well
if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.
2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.

The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar,
up about 0.09% in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage!

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the
weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and
half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic
depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a
musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it
was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.

It never deviated to be a film full of Easter
eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how
it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to move on this
from as quickly as possible.’

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining
room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man.
The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the
glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack
of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.

They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu
performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped
savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black
splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to
the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each,
is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West
Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems,
including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.

In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and mobile voting
teams had left areas with voters still in the
queues, it said.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time, giving
Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,”
he said. But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he
was worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”

The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties
with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.

Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement,
according to Christine Aochamus who represents the
Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.

Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after independence are
challenging support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.

Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could
become the first woman to lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich
country.

“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund,
who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of
long queues despite trying four different polling stations.

“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old security agent.

“It was to get people frustrated.”

Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood fest, which has
received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and

“insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as
fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China,
and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing
and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5
million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20
per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

QUITO, April 13 (Reuters) – Two Ecuadorean journalists and their driver,
who were kidnapped last month by Colombian insurgents, have been killed,
the leaders of both nations said on Friday, vowing justice.

“Regrettably, we have information that confirms the murder of our compatriots,” Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno said on state television. “It seems these criminals never planned to deliver them back safely.”

On Thursday, Moreno gave the group, former fighters
from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) who refused to demobilize under last year’s peace deal
with Colombia, 12 hours to prove the hostages were alive or face a military operation.

Moreno returned to Ecuador that day from a regional summit following reports
El Comercio reporter Javier Ortega, photographer Paul Rivas and driver Efrain Segarra were killed.

On Wednesday, a statement apparently issued by the Oliver Sinisterra front – a faction of the former FARC guerrillas
that refused to adhere to a 2016 peace agreement – reported the Ecuadoreans had died in a failed rescue operation.

Colombia denied any rescue attempt.

The journalists and their driver were on assignment for the Quito-based
El Comercio newspaper on the border between Ecuador and Colombia when they were seized on March 26.

A proof-of-life photograph released shortly after their kidnapping showed them chained and padlocked by their necks.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos pledged full cooperation with Ecuador
and said operations had begun against the rebels on both sides of the border.

“The FARC no longer exist… These are criminals dedicated to drug-trafficking,” he said
at the summit in Lima. “They will feel the full force of the law and our armed forces.”

More than a thousand FARC fighters refused to demobilize under the accord with Santos and continued
trafficking across the nation. Those operating in Colombia’s southern jungles have attacked
Ecuadorean security forces along the border.

The FARC, which battled for more than a half century, attacked military targets and civilian towns but generally allowed journalists to work
freely, unless they went against the rebels’ interests.

The media crew was reporting on violence in the Esmeraldas
region of the border when they were snatched by a group led by an Ecuadorean man identified as Walter Artizala, alias “Guacho.”

Colombia and Ecuador have both offered $100,000 each for
